There Is Nothing in the World as Quiet as Snow
The Postcard #9
My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never goin' back, the past is in the past
—Elsa in Frozen
Dear friend,
“There is nothing in the world as quiet as snow,” said the Danish poet and author Helge Rode (1870-1937). I always loved the poetry and beauty of that sentence.
For the past weeks, Copenhagen has been SO bitterly cold, and by now the Copenhagen Lakes are frozen so solid that the authorities have declared them safe to walk on. A few days ago, heavy snow fell, so on this first Saturday in February the city has turned into a perfect old-fashioned winter wonderland. Hundreds of people have been out since early morning: walking, skiing, skating, playing, and gathering around tiny games of ice hockey played by children on the ice.
For my own part, I am staying inside for now, content to watch the frolicking from my window. Later, I may venture out onto the frozen surface myself, pretending to be Elsa and quietly singing Let It Go in my head - or possibly out loud, depending on how many people are still around. I actually did sing the entire song out loud once while crossing Blackheath in London, and it was great fun.
While watching the spectacle, I am cosily snuggled up with a large cup of Irish Cream tea, my favourite Petit Écolier biscuits, and a good book. My February fictional book is the audio version of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, luxuriously read to me by Stephen Fry. Such a perfect, companionable voice for a winter afternoon by the window, and such exciting classic stories that I will return to in more depth in another post.
Wish you were here.
With love,
Annette

The Postcard 💌
The Postcard is a cozy, personal note from my favourite corners of the world: cafés or parks or bookshops or benches in London, Copenhagen, Paris, Nice, Dublin or Edinburgh. It will arrive in your inbox every month, even if you are on the free plan.
Over a cup of tea or coffee, I will share with you my adventures in the places I travel to, or things that matter to me at the moment: books I am reading, restaurants I love, thoughts I am having, or the simple joys of life.
I hope The Postcard will give you an insight into my life and work and a moment of inspiration and reflection.
