The Little Flat in Nice
The Postcard #14
Dear friend,
There are many things I miss about Nice when I am not there. My morning walk along the sea, my favourite place to have morning coffee and work, my dear friends, to name just a few.
But there is one thing I think about more than anything: the view from the tiny flat where I have stayed and lived every summer for many years of the beautiful square and the mountains of Provence in the background.
The flat itself is very modest, and I love it that way: a bed, a tiny kitchenette, and just enough floor space for a small desk and two chairs.
As the lights begin to dim in the evening, I set up a chair and a small table in front of the French balcony (or to be honest, sometimes I just lie down on my bed) and look at the view.
I love just being present with a glass of chilled rosé and watching as, one by one, the lights are turned on far away in the hills. You cannot see the actual houses, but the tiny lights are like pearls on a string that let me know that someone is there - perhaps coming home from work, perhaps preparing a lovely dinner, or just settling into the evening.
Down in the square just below my flat, the cafés start filling with locals meeting for an apéro or tourists looking for a place to spend the evening. I myself love to just sit quietly above it all, watching the day give way to night.
Even though I have been back in Copenhagen for a while now, I still find myself thinking of that view and all the stories unfolding below.
Sometimes our favourite memories of travel are not grand, busy landmarks. Sometimes they are the quiet places where we have just been able to be at ease and observe the world.
