What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?

Madeleine’s Creperie is one of my favourite places to sit and work in my beloved Blackheath Village in London.

02.02 is a date that holds a special significance, marking several different traditions and celebrations. We are now one month into 2025, and thus one step closer to spring. But this is also a day of legends, rituals, and a certain cult film that concerns the essence of transformation and the concept of time.

Groundhog Day: The Tradition

Today is Groundhog Day. Every year on this date in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, a groundhog—known as Punxsutawney Phil—emerges from his burrow. According to tradition, if Phil does not see his shadow, spring will come early. If he does see his shadow, we can expect six more weeks of winter. It is a charming, slightly absurd, yet deeply symbolic ritual that captures the human desire to predict and control the future and the weather.
